A PROGRAM FOR FACULTY:
Summer Institute for Israel Studies 2012
June 12 – 25, 2012 at Brandeis and June 27 – July 5, 2012 in Israel
A program of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis
University, the Summer Institute for Israel Studies (SIIS) assists faculty
in designing new courses in Israel Studies or incorporating a segment on
Israel into existing courses. Candidates from the social sciences and
humanities are invited to apply.
The Summer Institute has hosted professors from over 160 universities
worldwide. Participants come from a range of institutions: small liberal
arts colleges, Jewish and Christian academic institutions, US military
acadamies, large research universities and the Ivy League. Participants
have included scholars from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark,
Egypt, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United
Kingdom.
The first two weeks take place at Brandeis, with seminars on Israel’s
society, politics, economics, culture foreign affairs and diplomacy. The
program’s third week transpires in Israel, where Summer Institute Fellows
meet with scholars, government officials, writers, artists, public
intellectuals and Jewish and Arab community leaders. Fellows also visit
select historical and cultural sites.
Fellowships include:
-Seminars taught by world-class faculty from Israel and the United States
-Travel, meals, and accommodations at Brandeis and in Israel
-Stipend of up to $2500 for full course; $1500 for Brandeis seminar only
-Access to vast Israel Studies online resource center and Brandeis
University’s online library resources

Schusterman Graduate Fellowships in Israel Studies
Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University sponsors full
and partial fellowships - up to $24,000 per year, as well as tuition and
health care, renewable for up to five years - for doctoral candidates
focusing on Israel Studies. Eligible disciplines include Anthropology,
Politics, Sociology, Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, Jewish History and
Hebrew Literature. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to
candidates accepted into the Brandeis University Graduate School of Arts
and Sciences. Fellows must be accepted by the academic department to which
they apply, and indicate their interest in Israel Studies on their
application for admission.
